Message from Administration

Our school is located on the west side of Cochrane, nestled in the beautiful foothills of Alberta. Cochrane is a town steep in history and is the crossroads to the Rockies. Mitford School is a 6-8 configuration.

Parents often praise the greater sense of community that they feel exists in smaller schools, and several studies have noted the stronger relationships that seem to exist between students, between teachers, between students and teachers, and between parents and teachers in smaller schools. They also provide wonderful opportunities for student leadership and mentorship as older students work to support their younger peers.

Mitford School has currently 235 students from Grade 6 to Grade 8.  We have 11 teaching staff, 2 administrators along with 6 support staff. Our learning community is very excited about continuing our development of Mitford’s transformation into a student-centric school. The staff is prepared for this school year, ensuring that we have the required resources to provide diverse and empowering programming that will bring authentic and engaging learning experiences to Mitford School.

Our caring, thoughtful and dedicated staff members encourage all individuals to work to the best of their ability, to be thoughtful, reflective and active lifelong learners.  As a 21st Century school, Mitford’s staff will be providing a variety of learning opportunities for students to become engaged as critical thinkers, problem solvers, innovators, ecologically intelligent and entrepreneurial. As a learning community we understand the importance of teaching and modeling that empowers our students towards civic engagement and environmentally stewardship both locally and globally. Our staff strives to create a school where students are self-directed and active participants in their learning.

All staff members work to meet the needs of all learners in our care. Mitford School staff is busy redefining our physical environments, curricula, and teaching methods to accommodate the wide diversity of learning needs and individual differences among students. We are also being attentive to ensure that all students needs are being met.

Parent participation and support is greatly appreciated throughout the school. With great teamwork between home and school we are able to provide an enriched program for all of our students. Mitford School is a great place to learn. Our hope is that together as a community, our school becomes the hub of learning that stretches beyond classrooms and provides real world experiences and that our school spirit resonates every time you enter our doors. We encourage parents to attend our parent workshops that are offered at our school. The workshops are designed to support our parents in technology use at our school and mechanisms that help parents engage in the learning that is occurring in the classrooms. Attached to the Navigation Bar on the left side of this screen is several readings on Learning at Mitford and we encourage our parents to read about Learning at Mitford School.

We very much appreciate our active School Council, Friends of Mitford along with our Grandparent program and many other volunteers who eagerly support our efforts in making Mitford School an exceptional place to learn.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience.
Enjoy the 2018-2019 school year!
